It’s back. And we may need it now, more than ever.
The fourth-annual Casa Bonita art show at Lakewood’s Next gallery kicked off Feb. 19, and will be open for your viewing pleasure through March 7.
Curator and Next artist Betsy $B Rudolph says the idea started as a bit of a way to grab some attention for the gallery after their move from their previous trendy Navajo Street location in North Denver.
“When we moved up to Colfax from Navajo street we were a half block from Casa Bonita,” Rudolph says. “It was an easy identifier for people to find us, so we figured “Let’s celebrate it.” And now people just love it.”
Rudolph said it’s been a great way to introduce the gallery and broader 40 West Arts District to new faces.
“It’s a quirky, fun experience that attracts a lot of artists who don’t usually apply to be a part of art shows,” she said. “And the response has been tremendous from people that don’t usually attend them either.”
Rudolph says this year’s show includes work from more than 40 artists, including art from as far away as California. She said she was pleasantly surprised that no one submitted a Covid-inspired piece because with so much art reflecting the pandemic lately, it’s good escapism to keep things light.
However, the coronavirus did come up as the gallery was deciding whether or not to hold the show.
“It was a tough decision because we’ve really been scaling back our shows,” Rudolph said. “In the past we’ve had more than 300 people at the show’s opening. We thought about scaling back, but instead of emphasizing opening night, we’re spreading it out over three weekends.
Rudolph said masks and distancing will be in effect and people might have to wait a few minutes, but wants to assure folks that with selfie station, Casa Bonita swag (for purchase) and amazing art, a good time will be had by all.
Artwork in the show will be judged, with monetary prizes for first, second and third place, as well as a people’s choice award.
Next gallery is open Friday evenings from 6-10 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The Casa Bonita art show is a family-friendly event open to all ages.
