Lavender plants (and butterflies) put on a show at Botanic Gardens site

Posted

Some 2,000 lavender plants are showing off their color these days at the Denver Botanic Gardens' Chatfield Farms location adjacent to the Jefferson County part of Littleton, and butterflies are an added attraction.

The Lavender Garden was first installed in 2015 and features two species of lavender that thrive in Colorado's dry, sunny climate and in Chatfield Farms' sandy loam soils.

Next to the Lavender Garden is the Butterfly House, where monarchs and many other species frolic around you. Other butterflies -- not to mention plenty of bees -- are drawn to the lavender outside.

The 700-acre Chatfield Farms site also features wildflower gardens, historic farm buildings, nature trails that afford bird-watching opportunities, tours, a play area and more. Longer trails with sweeping views are available next door at Jefferson County's Hildebrand Ranch Park.

Chatfield Farms is located on Deer Creek Canyon Road west of South Wadsworth Boulevard, across from Chatfield Reservoir, just south of C-470. Most days, the site is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; on Saturday hours are 9 to 5.

Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for seniors, active military and veterans with ID, children and students with ID. Kids 2 and under are admitted free.

During COVID conditions, capacity is limited at Chatfield Farms. Timed admission tickets must be purchased in advance and are not available onsite. For more information and to buy tickets, visit botanicgardens.org/chatfield-farms.
