The 2019 Lakewood elections will be headlined by a rematch for Lakewood’s mayor position between current Mayor Adam Paul and Lakewood City Councilmember Ramey Johnson. In 2015, Paul beat Johnson for the position by less than 1%.

Outside of the mayor position, five City Council seats will be decided this November.

Both mayor and council positions are elected to four-year terms and can serve up to two consecutive terms. This year will feature 11 candidates jockeying for a position in Lakewood’s government.

Mayor

Paul is a Lakewood native and served on the Green Mountain Water Board in 2011. Before becoming mayor, he served two terms on City Council, representing Ward 4.

Johnson is currently one of the two councilmembers representing the city’s Ward 1. She served in the state legislature as the representative of House District 23 from 2003 to 2004.

Ward 1

Kyra deGruy previously ran for Ward 1 in 2017 when she lost the election to Johnson. She has spent time working on the 5A and 5B campaigns for more funding for Jeffco schools.

Charley Able currently sits on Lakewood City Council. He has worked at the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph and the Rocky Mountain News. He was elected to Council in 2015.

Ward 2

Sharon Vincent was elected to Lakewood City Council in 2015. She has lived in Lakewood for decades, and has an Alternative Dispute Resolution degree from the University of Denver.

Ward 3

Lakewood City Councilmember Pete Roybal’s spot is currently up for grabs.

Henry Hollender has worked as a civil engineer and has served on the Lakewood Advisory Commission and the city’s Planning Commission.

Anita Springsteen is a Colorado native, and she currently operates the Springsteen Law Firm. She earned her law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law.

Ward 4

Barb Franks is the incumbent. She’s lived in Lakewood for over 20 years and has worked on the Ute Trail Community Garden project, a garden that offers 52 plots to local gardeners.

Christopher Arlen is a principal consultant for the Soft Skills Company, a management consulting and professional development firm that provides training solutions for governments and nonprofits.

Ward 5

Dana Gutwein currently represents Ward 5 on Lakewood City Council. Three generations of her family have lived in Lakewood, and she is a former field engineer.

Chad Gardner is focused on improving Lakewood’s roads and sidewalks, protecting and improving the city’s natural open space and improving sporting fields.
