Our upcoming presidential election has made me think about what I want to see in the President of the United States. I’d like to have a president in office who thinks exactly like I do, one who has never told a lie or had a scandal, and who is always upfront with the country. I think I’m pretty safe in saying that this won’t ever happen.
So, rather than trying to find the “perfect” individual, I look for three character traits that I believe a good president should have; poise, rationality, and compassion.
Poise is manners, dignity, and grace. Our president’s carriage and dignity personifies all of us both at home and abroad, and I want to be represented in a favorable manner.
I want a president who behaves rationally when confronted with dire situations. I look for four actions when a crisis arises:
Gather the facts about what happened;
Find the underlying causes of problems where possible;
Identify and evaluate appropriate responses and their consequences; and
Take measured and decisive action with confidence.
Finally, I want a president who is compassionate. Someone who has the ability to feel for others and will want to help them. A true public servant of the people of the USA.
For me, these are the fundamental characteristics of a person to represent me in our country and around the world. What do you look for in a president?
