An independent food series starring a former Parker resident is now available to the public.

“What’s on the Menu? With Michelle Ullmann” is available on Amazon Prime Video after two years of shooting and editing. Michelle Ullmann hosts the show teaching viewers complex intricacies of the restaurant business. Ullmann features seven Denver-area restaurants, from Aurora to the Tech Center to downtown. The first episode in the series features La Baguette de Normandy, a French bakery and restaurant in Parker.

Ullmann and her family moved from Parker to Hendersonville, Tennessee, at the beginning of the year to begin shooting Season Two of the series in the Nashville area. Shooting has been delayed due to COVID-19, Ullmann said.

The Parker Chronicle interviewed Ullmann about her journey to bring “What’s on the Menu?” to life.

What was your initial reaction?

Relieved, and also a little bit stressed. Now that it’s out there, are we going to grab the viewers’ attention now? It feels really, really good to be done with the “doing” of the show for Season One. I’m a little stressed for the next step, and that’s back to the producer hat, and I’m also excited for Season Two.

We didn’t plan the timing of all this. We hope, with this release, it will help those seven businesses in growing and recovering.

What is the next step for you?

We plan to start scouting for Season Two in Tennessee. When we first started to scout, COVID happened, so we’re on a hold until everything is back, and until everything is open there’s nothing we can really do. We have to see what restaurants survive the pandemic. All seven (Denver) locations are still open, so that makes me happy. For them it’s tough to survive something like this, and they’ve fared pretty well.

What has life been like for you as you look toward the next season?

Fairly hectic. We have four kids, who have been doing virtual schooling for the first day. We got them settled into school and got them packed. My father had been sick, so we’ve been back and forth between Arizona. My husband does a lot of the editing, working probably 40-50 hours a week at his day job and working for me 20 hours on the weekend. He’s been supportive and working more hours than I’d want to ask him for.

What do you do this for?

We want to support that idea that … everybody has their favorite chains — they are tried and true — but when you go somewhere new, ask a local because they’re going to be the ones that know the best locally owned places to eat. They’ll happily tell you nine times out of 10. They love to talk about it. All you have to do is ask.
